During their vacation in Savannah, Rebecca Lynch and her husband made a spontaneous stop while returning from Georgia. While reflecting on her trip, Rebecca realized she wanted a more meaningful memento than typical vacation souvenirs.
In a heartwarming decision, they chose to adopt a local cat. With many animal shelters in their home state, the couple knew the four-legged passenger would have no trouble settling into the car for the ride home.
Rebecca learned about Lizzie, a terrier who narrowly escaped being euthanized at a shelter. Tragically, her previous owners surrendered her to the shelter while she was pregnant, knowing her fate. On top of that, Lizzie had suffered a broken leg.
Moved by her story, Rebecca knew this little dog needed a loving home more than anything else, having endured so much hardship. As they left the Georgia shelter, Lizzie curled up and drifted off to sleep on a blanket in the backseat of the Lynch family’s car, finally at peace.
At first, Lizzie was anxious during the car ride, but after a few hours, she seemed to realize she was safe and no one would harm her. Then, something unexpected happened: Lizzie went into labor during the drive. Perhaps she sensed that she was now in caring hands, or maybe it was simply time for her to become a mother.
Rebecca, now Lizzie’s new owner, found herself stepping into the role of a midwife, helping Lizzie through the birth and tending to her newborn puppies with care and compassion.
On the way to the veterinary clinic, Lizzie delivered three puppies, and a fourth was born in the clinic’s reception area under the care of the staff. While continuing their journey, two more puppies arrived.
Though Lizzie and her puppies were healthy, they stayed at the vet for a few days so the professionals could monitor them closely. Once cleared, the family headed home, where the Lynches had already prepared everything to ensure the comfort of the new mom and her babies. As the puppies grow stronger, Rebecca plans to find each one a loving home.
