Last month, rescuers from Stillwater Animal Welfare (SAW) managed to capture two dogs spotted running through the busy streets of Oklahoma City.

While it’s typical for SAW workers to rescue multiple dogs at once, they usually witness these street dogs becoming independent over time. However, it was immediately clear to the staff that these two shared a special bond.

“They traveled an unknown distance,” said Ashlie Jerkes, an animal care worker at SAW, “but they always stayed by each other’s side.”

The staff welcomed the pair with open arms and named them Bonnie and Clyde. Even in the safety of the shelter, they refused to be separated.

“They spent their stray hold in the same kennel, where they appeared to have a strong bond,” Jerkes shared with me recently.

For three days, Bonnie and Clyde rested side by side, receiving medical care to help them recover. Despite their battle with heartworm, both dogs eventually grew strong enough to be considered for adoption.

When they were briefly separated on the adoption floor, the two inseparable friends were overjoyed to reunite. “Whenever they had time outside, they would run around together,” said Jerkes at the time.

Clyde was soon adopted by a loving family, leaving Bonnie alone at the shelter. Heartbroken, she deeply missed her best friend and began to lose hope of finding her own happy ending.

One day, a shelter worker took a picture of Bonnie lying sadly on her bed and shared it on social media, hoping to help her find a home. “Bonnie has been all alone since her brother was adopted,” the worker wrote in a Facebook post, “and she clearly misses having a companion to snuggle with.”

Luckily, their goal was achieved earlier than expected.

“That was posted on Friday, and by Monday morning, someone came in right away to adopt her,” Jerkes shared.

Bonnie has finally found her ideal home, and she’s overjoyed.

“She’s already adjusting!” Bonnie’s new owner, Brayden Routh, commented on Facebook. “She’s going to have an amazing life, full of adventures with her blue heeler-mix big sister.”

Bonnie was adopted just a few days ago, but her new family already loves her as if she’s been a part of their lives forever.

While she will always cherish the memories of her brother Clyde, Bonnie is excited for the new adventures that await her.
