While we wish we could save every dog, sadly, that’s not always possible. Janine Guido learned this firsthand when she met Watson, a pit bull. As the founder of Speranza Animal Rescue, Janine takes care of many animals in need.
Watson was found in a Philadelphia park by a college student who was there alone. The student quickly realized the dog was starving and injured, so they rushed him to an emergency veterinary hospital. There, the vet delivered heartbreaking news: Watson’s condition was critical, and his cancer was progressing rapidly. The situation was urgent.
Watson made his way from the veterinarian’s office to the animal shelter. The staff ensured that he could stay there as comfortably as possible.
“I had a feeling the next day would be tough,” Guido told The Dodo. “I didn’t want to leave him when he needed me most.”
She gathered blankets and dog beds, comforting Watson by holding him close. Throughout the night, she cradled him as he drifted off to sleep.
“He slept soundly all night, snuggled up close to me,” Guido shared. “I woke up in tears.”
The next morning, Watson stopped eating and drinking and began pacing in circles. Guido knew his time was near. She stayed by his side, offering comfort during his final moments.
Watson passed away shortly after, having finally experienced love for the first time in his life.
“I’m grateful I could be there with him on his last night,” Guido said. “I told him how much he meant to me and how important he was. My heart is broken, but I wouldn’t change a thing.”
