Due to the large number of dogs in shelters, all of them are seeking a forever home. Unfortunately, some of them may end up waiting longer than expected.
Often, dogs are overlooked by potential adopters who tend to favor younger, more traditionally appealing puppies. Factors like breed, age, appearance, or health conditions can lead to these dogs being passed over.
However, every now and then, a kind-hearted individual steps up and shows compassion for these animals. In one instance, a 2-year-old girl chose a pit bull from the shelter, selecting him over all the other available animals.
When Audra Spurio took her 2-year-old daughter to the shelter to adopt a dog, she never expected her to be drawn to a sick and mangy pit bull. Despite noticing the dog’s need for care, the little girl remained determined to choose him.
In an interview with The Dodo, Audra shared, “My daughter wanted to meet that dog more than any other at the shelter that day.” Despite the fact that the dog “smelled of mange,” the little girl was determined, saying, “Mommy, that one.”
When the dog was brought into the yard, Gigi, her daughter, said, “I need your help.”
Thanks to Gigi’s request, the pit bull was allowed to go outside and play. While the little girl was gentle and patient, the dog remained shy and scared.
Where many children might have been put off by the dog’s condition, Gigi simply saw a friend who needed help.
As the little girl played with the dog outside, offering belly rubs and kisses, their instant bond was unmistakable.
“I watched this frightened puppy completely relax in G’s hands,” Audra shared. “She clung tightly to my daughter and wouldn’t let go.”
Gigi pleaded with her mother to take the pit bull home, eager to care for her as she was being returned to her kennel. The young girl said, “Sick doggie, go home.”
Luckily, Gigi’s wish came true. Out of all the dogs at the shelter that day, she chose the sick pit bull, and now Scarlett, as she’s called, has found her forever home.
Audra shared with The Dodo that Scarlett is now home and doing much better, still devoted to Gigi.
Gigi’s love for animals has inspired nearly 14 million YouTube followers, many of whom have expressed hope and optimism for the future.
What a kind and compassionate young girl. We’re so happy that Scarlett now has a loving family, a beautiful home, and a caring protector.
