A puppy left behind by its previous owner was rescued by a firefighter and taken to a shelter. Last week, a fire broke out at a building complex in Santa Monica. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a dog named Nalu who was unconscious and struggling to breathe.
Firefighter Andrew Klein told KABC, “I found him amidst the heat and smoke. When I reached out, I realized he was already unresponsive,” he explained.
Before placing the puppy in an oxygen mask, Klein administered “mouth-to-snout” CPR. After nearly 20 minutes, the dog began to breathe on its own, regained consciousness, and started to move. Neighbors then transported him to a nearby animal hospital.
Nalu, a Bichon Frise/Shih Tzu mix, could not be saved when owner Crystal Lamirande returned home to find her apartment engulfed in flames. According to KABC, while Lamirande lost everything in the fire, she has since formed a new connection with her local fire department.
“That was pretty incredible,” Klein told KTLA. “I’ve been on several animal rescues that didn’t end as well as Nalu’s did. I’ve participated in many similar rescues, but this one was a real success for both the team and the department,” he added.
In just ten minutes, firefighters put out the fire without any injuries.
