A mother’s love truly knows no limits, and Ruby, a devoted Doberman pinscher, shows that this kind of affection transcends species.
Just one week after welcoming a litter of six puppies, Ruby opened her heart to an abandoned newborn kitten, nurturing her as if she were one of her own. This sweet story is both touching and inspiring.
Brittany Callan from Geneseo is the proud owner of six Dobermans, including Ruby, who, at four-and-a-half years old, is now caring for a new litter of six puppies.
That litter soon grew to seven after Brittany made an unexpected discovery while cleaning her aunt’s gutters.
She found a newborn kitten, seemingly left behind by its mother. Brittany and her cousin, Nicole Gibbs, waited to see if the mother cat would return, but later brought the kitten inside when they heard coyotes nearby. Nicole decided to name the tiny kitten Ramblin’ Rose after her late father’s favorite song.
Ramblin’ Rose was incredibly small and still had part of her dried umbilical cord attached, leading Brittany to believe she was only a few days old.
Newborns need milk to survive, and just next door, Ruby was still nursing her own week-old puppies, who hadn’t even opened their eyes yet. Brittany decided to see if Ruby would accept the kitten.
She gently held the tiny kitten close to Ruby, allowing her to sniff the newcomer. Ruby responded by immediately cleaning the kitten, just like a mother would. Brittany then placed the kitten near Ruby to nurse, and to her delight, the kitten began to suckle. Ruby simply laid her head back down, as if nothing unusual had happened. Now, Ruby dotes on the kitten, carrying her around the house and giving her even more attention than her own puppies.
Ruby will likely nurse the kitten for another three to four weeks. To ensure the kitten gets enough nutrition, Brittany has been supplementing with kitten formula she picked up at Tractor Supply.
Although Brittany has a soft spot for little Ramblin’ Rose, she doesn’t plan to keep her. Not all of her Dobermans are as welcoming toward cats as Ruby, and her husky-shepherd mix isn’t fond of them at all. Instead, Ramblin’ Rose will find a home with a family member.
Once the kitten leaves, Ruby will still have her paws full with her own lively puppies—three males and three females—but she might even have a moment to chase down the one animal she really doesn’t like.
