People keep a wide variety of animals as pets, ranging from familiar companions like cats and dogs to more exotic choices, including snakes and, on rare occasions, wolves. Today, we spotlight the remarkable story of Kira, a wolf cub who found an unexpected home.
Kira came into Alida’s life as a small black-and-white wolf cub, having been abandoned by her mother at just three days old. Acting as her savior, Alida took on the challenge of raising and training Kira, treating her not as a wild animal but more like a domesticated dog, providing her with a second chance at life.
Although wolves haven’t been domesticated over generations like dogs, Alida put in significant effort and care to train Kira. The young wolf, initially facing the world on her own, needed to adapt to a host of new experiences. This encouraged Alida to focus on socializing Kira more extensively. Kira engaged with people of all ages, met different animals, and explored her environment.
Through careful domestication efforts, Kira evolved from a vulnerable cub into a well-mannered companion. Alida explained, “Kira’s mother had difficulties living with a family and ended up in a nursery, which led her to lose trust in humans. Born in the same nursery, Kira would likely struggle to survive in the wild, as she hasn’t learned crucial survival skills like hunting.”
Alida stepped in when Kira was 28 days old, rescuing her from the nursery and hand-feeding her until she regained her strength. The socialization process included exposing Kira to a variety of environments, scents, and sounds, helping her overcome her natural fear of the unfamiliar. Alida’s commitment bore fruit as Kira developed a calm and gentle temperament, showing kindness towards children and the ability to coexist harmoniously with other dogs.
Kira’s adventures with Alida played a vital role in helping her adjust to the city, boosting her comfort and confidence. Alida shared stories about their encounters with intrigued onlookers, who often expressed both fascination and concern about having a wolf as a companion. Their journey garnered attention on Instagram, sparking mixed reactions; while some praised the bond, others criticized the choice to keep such a predatory animal at home.
For Alida, Kira has blended seamlessly into the life of a typical domestic dog. Now, Kira enjoys a happy life with Alida’s human family, which includes a 7-year-old son named Bogdan. Curious passers-by frequently approach Alida, asking about her experience living with a wolf and how the adoption process works.
