A compassionate man adopts a 16-year-old dog, ensuring that the senior pup spends the rest of his life in a loving, caring home.
When we bring a dog into our lives, we must accept that their time with us will be shorter than we wish. Our goal is always to give them the best life possible because, while they may only be a part of our lives, we are their whole world. And we know they deserve every bit of love and care.
Zack Schou, co-founder of Marley’s Mutts and the Pawsitive Change initiative, felt exactly this way when he first laid eyes on an elderly dog named Henry at a rescue shelter in Tehachapi, California. At 16 years old, Henry was less agile and energetic than the other dogs. His coat was rough with patches of gray, showing the wear of his years.
Zack was deeply moved by the idea of the dog spending his final years in such a way, a thought he simply couldn’t bear. In March 2021, he stepped forward and volunteered to become Henry’s adoptive father. His goal was to give Henry the chance to make new friends and enjoy new experiences in his remaining years.
Despite his advanced age, Henry initially struggled to walk. However, with the encouragement of a kind and determined dog, he soon began regaining his energy, and before long, he was pacing and even running. When Zach was just a puppy, his adoptive father found it hard to process the news of Henry’s condition.
At the foster home, Henry discovered he had testicular cancer, adding to his age-related challenges. Fortunately, with surgery, he overcame the illness. This resilient dog fought for his life and came through victorious.
According to Zack, Henry wasn’t supposed to stay with him for long. Given the dog’s advanced age, Zack believed Henry only had a few months left. But to Zack’s amazement, Henry defied expectations and seemed to grow more energetic with each passing day.
Even though Zack was thrilled with Henry’s progress, he decided to find him a new home. His goal was to ensure that the charming little dog could enjoy the best years of his life in a loving environment.
Thanks to Henry’s lively spirit and cheerful demeanor, it wasn’t hard to find him a new home, despite his age. His new owner adores him, caring for him deeply and sharing their adventures together on her Instagram account.
Henry still enjoys wandering outside and soaking up the sunshine. She cherishes the outdoors and is aware of the love and support from her family, as well as the large online community that follows her journey.
This transformation in Henry’s life was made possible by Zac, who met her at the shelter and decided she deserved the best life could offer. Once a stray, old dog, Henry is now a beloved pet living a life full of care and affection.
